The Los Angeles Rams are bringing back a familiar face in a bid to increase their odds of success in a Super Bowl or bust season.

The Rams traded for wide receiver Tutu Atwell, who had just left for the Miami Dolphins in free agency this past March, in exchange for running back Jarquez Hunter , reports Adam Schefter, ESPN's NFL insider .

Why did the Rams bring back Tutu Atwell?

Atwell, who's spent all five of his NFL seasons with the Rams, returns at a key time for the team.

The Rams have Super Bowl aspirations, but one of their biggest weaknesses is depth at the wide receiver position.

Their stars, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams , are excellent, but there's a good bit of uncertainty behind them, especially given Adams' injury history and Nacua's physical style of play, explained Los Angeles Sports Report's Nelson Espinal.

"There's a lot of questions at the pass catcher position once you go beyond the two stars at top, so I think that easily, when you look at the depth chart, receiver is the biggest question mark and the biggest weakness on this Rams roster," he said.

It's possible that Adams and Nacua could miss time. Adams hasn't played a full regular season since 2023, when he was with the Las Vegas Raiders .

And Nacua, who's dealing with a psoas injury this preseason , could also be suspended for a tumultuous offseason that included a trip to rehab , allegations that he bit a woman and reports of antisemitic comments and gestures .

If either or both of the wideouts misses playing time, having someone with experience in head coach Sean McVay's system will be important, as it's "notoriously super hard to understand," Espinal added.

"When you have two players like that with, I would say, very reasonable health question marks, it's going to really matter who your third pass catching option is," Espinal said. "And when you look at the receiver depth chart, it's pretty bare bones. You have a bunch of guys who I would say are more replacement level receivers, and then you have rookie CJ Daniels who could possibly take a big leap. But again, these McVay offenses, they're so hard to get a good hold of."

Given the risks involved in an all-in season, it makes sense while the Rams would return to the familiar.
