Kane's penalty miss proves costly as England lose to world champions Spain

World Cup winners Spain came from 2-1 down to defeat England 3-2 in the Nations League at Wembley with Harry Kane missing a penalty.

The newly-crowned champions took the lead just two minutes into the game when Lamine Yamal robbed Marc Guéhi before finishing past James Trafford .

From that point on, Spain could easily have scored more with Trafford making a good save to deny Ferran Torres . The Paris Saint-Germain forward then had another excellent chance but again couldn't find a way to goal.

Spain's wastefulness was punished by the Three Lions in the 36th minute through a quick counter-attack. Nico Williams slipped as Spain were on the attack with Elliot Anderson finding Anthony Gordon whose lovely flick played Jude Bellingham through the middle.

The Real Madrid midfielder then returned the favour with a perfectly weighted pass for the Barcelona wideman who finished past the out-of-position Unai Simón.

Just a few minutes later, England were ahead. This time with Nico O'Reilly crossing in for Harry Kane whose header went in despite Marc Cucurella 's attempt to block it.

Shortly into the second half the home side were awarded a penalty when Rodri tripped Jude Bellingham – a decision that was only given after the referee was sent to the screen by VAR. Kane stepped up but slipped at the crucial moment with his effort then bouncing off the bar.

That miss seemed to galvanise Spain who levelled with an hour gone. Álex Baena, who had come off the bench about five minutes earlier, with a curling effort after O'Reilly's errant pass.

After levelling the score Baena then assisted with what turned out to be the winning goal as he fed in fellow substitute Mikel Oyarzabal in the 74th minute who lifted the ball over Trafford to make it 3-2 to the visitors.

Thomas Tuchel brought on Morgan Gibbs-White and Dominic Calvert-Lewin late on but neither could find an equaliser with England losing their first game of the new Nations League campaign.
