Honors coming to legendary East Texas football coaches Harper and Parker

MARSHALL, Texas ( KTAL/KMSS ) — The Marshall Independent School District (MISD) has announced details for upcoming celebrations to honor two legendary football coaches.

MISD will name the athletic pavilion in honor of Coach Bill Harper and the football field in honor of Coach Dennis Parker.

On September 11, 2026, at the Marshall High School (MHS) Cafeteria at 5:30 p.m., Coach Harper will be honored with a reception at the MHS Cafeteria. The reception will be followed by an on-field presentation at 6:30 p.m., and kickoff at 7 p.m.

There will be a meet-and-greet with Coach Parker on September 17 at the MHS Library at 7:30 p.m. On September 18, there will be a reception in the MHS cafeteria at 6:00 p.m., followed by an on-field presentation at 7:00 p.m., and kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Coach Harper served as an assistant coach and the defensive coordinator at MHS for the 1990 5A Division I (commonly known as Big 5A) State Championship campaign

He took over as head coach in 1991 after Coach Parker departed to coach the University of North Texas (UNT) and filled the role until 2001.

Coach Harper retired from coaching in 2002, but returned to the sidelines in 2005 when he became the head coach and athletic director in Nacogdoches. In 2007, he ended a 15-year playoff drought for the Dragons.

Coach Parker took the head coaching job at MHS in 1984, years removed from the Mavericks' last playoff win in 1949.

In just four years, Coach Parker and the Mavericks won the district championship before falling to Dallas Carter in the quarterfinals.

Carter would later have their state championship, and entire season, overturned due to a grade-changing scandal, making Marshall the first Texas team to have an undefeated season in the record books but not win a state championship. For that feat, Parker was named Texas High School Coach of the Year, an award almost exclusively won by state championship coaches.

In 1990, just six years after Coach Parker arrived, he and the Mavericks won their Big 5A state championship. He left after the season to coach the University of North Texas.

MISD previously named the track after Coach Emma Bennett, who led the Lady Mavs to 10 consecutive district championships in the 80s and 90s, and the fieldhouse after Marshall native NFL Hall of Famer Y.A. Tittle.
