‘Horrible Game From Drake (Maye), Disgusting’ — Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy Rips Patriots QB After Meek Week 1 Loss to Seahawks

The New England Patriots opened the season with a result that has quickly turned optimism into frustration. A promising 10-0 start against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday night disappeared as the Patriots struggled to finish drives and protect their lead against a team that lost its quarterback on the opening drive.

The defeat also placed quarterback Drake Maye at the center of postgame criticism, with one of the Patriots' most outspoken supporters making his feelings clear.

Barstool Sports founder and longtime Patriots fan Dave Portnoy did not hold back after New England fell 13-10 to Seattle at Lumen Field.

Portnoy singled out Maye's abysmal passing and interceptions in the final quarter while also criticizing the offense, the team's receiving production, and the way the Patriots handled a game they had under control early.

"Only the first game, only the first game of the season, but that was tough to watch," Portnoy said . "Horrible game from Drake, that last throw. Disgusting. We lose A.J. Brown with what I guess is going to be a pretty severe injury.

"The other guy, the new guy, [Romeo] Doubs, just does a disgusting drop. Play calling sucked most of the night, I thought, on offense. The game was right there for the taking. Obviously, it's only Week 1, but that was a [expletive] way to start the season. Could be a lot better than that. That was F-minus [expletive]."

Maye's three interceptions made his night particularly difficult. His final turnover came with less than 30 seconds remaining, when he threw into the end zone instead of helping the Patriots position themselves for a potential game-tying field goal. Seattle's Josh Jobe came down with the interception, ending New England's final opportunity.

The earlier turnovers also carried consequences.

Maye's first interception followed a tipped pass intended for newcomer Romeo Doubs , while his second came on a third-and-14 throw over the middle that was picked off by Julian Love . Seattle turned both drives into points, helping erase New England's lead of more than one score.

The Patriots also lost A.J. Brown to a right ankle injury in the third quarter, further reducing their offensive options. Doubs, meanwhile, finished without a catch on three targets and dropped a pass before Maye's second interception.

Seattle's comeback came despite starting quarterback Sam Darnold leaving with a hip injury on the opening drive. Drew Lock stepped in and helped the Seahawks rally, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba finished with 122 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged the disappointment but urged the Patriots to learn from their mistakes and move forward with the long season ahead.

"I'm disappointed, but, like I said, we'll never accept losing, but we have to embrace being able to move on and improve, and we know how long the season is," Vrabel said .
