Top ranked Texas program gets star QB back, but not its three vacated wins

One of Texas's best high school quarterbacks has come full circle.

On Thursday, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) state executive committee reversed its eligibility ruling on Lewisville junior quarterback Laykon Brassfield . The Fighting Farmers star is now eligible to return to the field after missing four games, but their three vacated wins will not be reinstated.

Brassfield's appeal passed by a unanimous vote after the DEC initially voted 7-0 to rule him ineligible after he transferred from Edmond North in Oklahoma to the North Texas school after his sophomore year. The DEC's initial investigation found that Brassfield did not actually reside in Lewisville and declared he could not participate in varsity competition for one calendar year from the date he enrolled at Lewisville.

According to UIL executive director Jamey Harrison, the earlier ruling was a "reasonable" at the time

Initial residency questions arose regarding an apartment in Lewisville and a house in Argyle owned by Laykon's grandfather, which was used to enroll his younger siblings in Argyle ISD. Brassfield's father, Jonathan, stated this was to meet the children's educational needs. Attorney Brian Wcislo said the situation was previously disclosed on Lewisville ISD and AISD Athletic Participation Forms.

Jonathan Brassfield, Laykon's father, confirmed he was a financial guarantor for the Argyle house while the family lived in a 600-square-foot apartment in Lewisville. They have since moved to a 1,200-square-foot apartment in the Lewisville attendance zone, removed the guarantor status from the Argyle residency, and transferred Laykon's siblings out of Argyle.

"I want to reinforce, as a family, we have lived in Lewisville. This has been our home," Jonathan said Thursday. "I certainly hate that there has been confusion in the paperwork that has interrupted my son's life. I take full responsibility for some confusion on the paperwork, but we live in Lewisville; we've lived in Lewisville. We love it here."

Lewisville remains "undefeated" without Brassfield

Brassfield, named a team captain in his first year with the program, led the Farmers to a 3-0 start and looked like one of the state's best quarterbacks. The Fighting Farmers quarterback threw for 734 passing yards, 14 passing touchdowns and just one interception. On the ground, he added 133 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Without their star quarterback, Lewisville has continued to win big, remaining undefeated in district play and outscoring their last four opponents 157-25. Lewisville backup quarterback Aiden Evans, who also stars at defensive back and is committed to Sam Houston State, has thrown for 393 yards and run for 359 yards, with eight total touchdowns-four passing, four rushing.

Brassfield will officially return to action as the No. 11-ranked Fighting Farmers look to lock up a district title against rival Flower Mound on Friday night. It's not immediately clear whether Evans or Brassfield will start at quarterback, but both will likely see the field in the pivotal matchup.
