Week 5 high school football roundup, Southeast upsets Crestview

In addition to our coverage of Streetsboro-Roosevelt , here's a look at what happened in other Portage County high school football games in Week 5:

The Pirates picked up one of the biggest upsets of the week, avenging last year's 42-0 loss to the Rebels.

While Southeast coach Pat Youel felt confident his team could overcome the odds — Drew Pasteur's Fantastic 50 had Crestview as a 28-point favorite — his team had to overcome injuries to Liam McCann and Bruce Nelson. The Pirates overcame the week's tough injury luck with a huge start, taking a 21-0 lead.

The Rebels (1-4, 0-2 Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Gray Tier) got back into it with a lengthy touchdown drive going into halftime, then blocked a punt en route to a third-quarter touchdown to draw within 21-14. Crestview tied the game before the third quarter was through, helped by a long punt return.

Knotted at 21 midway through the fourth quarter, the Pirates (2-3, 2-0) took over thanks to a powerful ground-and-pound drive that included plenty of strong runs by Drake Longgood and Tyler Shaw, capped by a Shaw touchdown plunge.

"We stepped up big in the fourth quarter, got a couple big stops and we got the ball back with about seven minutes to go and we just went on a drive for the ages," Youel said. "[It was] Drake Longgood, Tyler Shaw and our offensive line, nothing fancy, nothing pretty. We ran iso and I probably called iso six to eight times in a row and we went down the field, chipped away and punched it in with two minutes to go in the game."

Longgood and Shaw ran behind a powerful offensive line consisting of Seth Besaw, Connor Buchkoski, Daniel Clint, Ethan Fox, Aidan McCann and Matt Neer.

"Our offensive line was just amazing on that drive," Youel said. "They just really were."

Alaunte Massrock had the other three touchdowns, all on the ground, for the Pirates.

Kicker Hannah Timmons scored her 100th career point as part of a dominant effort for the G-Men (5-0, 2-0 MVAC Gray). Max Bultrowicz got Garfield going with a 29-yard pick-six with Ryder Cain adding a three-yard touchdown run before the opening quarter was through. The G-Men left no doubt with a 33-point second quarter that included Collin McGranahan recording his own pick-six along with a 60-yard touchdown run. Garfield ran for over a first down per carry with 32 rushes for 375 yards, led by Cain's seven carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns. The G-Men also held the Golden Flashes to negative-eight yards.

The Greenmen snapped a three-game skid with a commanding performance. Mathew Huth set the tone with a 60-yard touchdown run midway through the opening quarter. Carter Fitzgerald added a touchdown run minutes into the second quarter for Aurora (2-3, 1-1 Suburban American). Tommy Stenger ran in the last two touchdowns, one apiece in the second and third quarters, for the Greenmen. Huth had a team-high 94 rushing yards on nine carries while Stenger had 10 carries for 65 yards. Fitzgerald had a monstrous game on both ends of the field, tallying nine tackles, four tackles for loss and four quarterback hurries on defense. Aurora shut Twinsburg out over the first three quarters, with the Greenmen's defensive heroics also including a Luke Hilditch interception.

Quarviyon Siggers-Greco found the end zone four times in the first quarter — first for a touchdown to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead, then on three two-point conversions (two rushing and one passing). Siggers-Greco had seven carries for 104 yards and the touchdown while Caileb Tompkins had 15 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown. Landen Williams took a fumble to the house as part of Mogadore's 30 first-quarter points while Maddox Smith found Collin Hendrickson for a 24-yard touchdown pass as part of the Wildcats' early rush. Jackson Wallace added a 62-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for Mogadore (4-1).

The Rovers (2-3, 0-2 Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division) fell despite four touchdowns (two rushing, two passing) from Blake Mullaly. The Rootstown senior quarterback completed 13 of 20 passes for 266 yards and added 19 carries for 113 yards on the ground. Max McEwuen (five catches, 70 yards) and Grayson Rantilla (five catches, 84 yards, one touchdown) were primary targets for Mullaly. With Chagrin Falls leading 28-13, Mullaly knotted the score with a one-yard touchdown run, a point-after attempt, a 78-yard touchdown pass to Kiel Reuting and a two-point conversion toss to Rantilla. But the Tigers (4-1, 2-0) surged ahead on Max Frankel's one-yard touchdown run with 2:23 remaining. Will Flannery (21 carries, 114 yards) and Brady Kaas added two touchdowns apiece for Chagrin Falls.
