‘I’ve seen weirder things happen,’ Pirates not giving up on playoff hopes despite long odds

Tuesday's game between the Pirates and Giants at PNC Park on Tuesday night consisted of 25 runs, 34 hits, 12 walks, four hit batters and one crucial error.

All that resulted in a 13-12 win for the Pirates, who have now won three games in a row and five of their last seven after back-to-back series wins against the Padres and Cardinals.

"Eventful is a good way to put it," manager Don Kelly said after the game. "Getting a win any way you can get it."

With the win, the Pirates moved to 68-71 on the season and five games out of the third spot in the National League wild card race. The Phillies and Cubs are well above the rest of the pack. The Diamondbacks and Padres have been trading places between third and fourth in the standings. In between the two NL West foes and the Pirates are the Marlins and Cardinals.

A poor showing to start the second half served as a serious blow to Pittsburgh's playoff chances. According to Fangraphs, the Pirates have just a 2.5% chance of making the postseason, but the team isn't ready to throw in the towel.

"I've seen weirder things happen," Brandon Lowe said. "We've seen some incredible streaks happen. I've seen teams implode. I've been on teams that have imploded a little bit. Five games really isn't that much. People can say that it is. But it's not even a week's worth of games. Anything can happen. That's the biggest thing — we have to take care of things that we can take care of. We play our baseball, we'll see where we are in a few weeks."
