Tennis fans divided over ‘insane’ Coco Gauff stat as straight-set win sends her into US Open Round of 16

Tennis fans cannot agree on one statistic after Coco Gauff's victory over Cristina Bucsa at the US Open.

Gauff defeated Bucsa in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) to reach the Round of 16, where she will face fellow American Iva Jovic.

It is the 19th time that Gauff has reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam in her professional tennis career.

Many would describe this as an outstanding achievement for a 22-year-old, but several critics have a different view.

Dozens of tennis fans commented on ESPN's social media post about Coco Gauff reaching the Round of 16 19 times.

One fan claimed that "she will save American tennis," and another suggested that she is a "potential GOAT."

"Coco is running a Hall of Fame career on a college schedule," said another, while a fourth wrote: "19 Round of 16s before turning 23 is insane consistency."

However, many others argued that the statistic highlights Gauff's consistent failures in the biggest matches.

The American is a two-time Grand Slam champion, but she has only reached three finals in four seasons as a top-ranked player.

"19 R16s is nothing special. Fans hyping basic stats like this make tennis so boring," commented an X user.

Two others posted that the Round of 16 "is starting to look more like a ceiling," and that "it just shows she folds early every slam."

While those comments were harsh, that comes with the territory of being a world-class athlete in the age of social media.
