'We have a common goal': Kompany on Klopp visit

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has said he and Jürgen Klopp have "a common goal" as he talked about a weekend visit to Munich of the new German national team helmsman.

Kompany said on Tuesday that he had "a very interesting" exchange with Klopp: "50% was about the time we played against each other and 50% was about the future."

Kompany was up against former Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool coach Klopp as a player for SV Hamburg and Manchester City and then as Burnley coach.

"It's interesting to have a chat with a coach who's no longer involved in the day-to-day training work but who has a wealth of experience. I've seen what he's done and the successes he's had. It's interesting to hear how he went about it and achieved it," Kompany said.

Klopp was appointed in succession of Julian Nagelsmann who resigned after Germany's round of 32 exit at the World Cup.

Klopp will announce his first squad on September 17 for four Nations League group matches against the Netherlands, Serbia and Greece (twice), with a number of Bayern players expected to be picked.

"In my experience, the relationship between the club and the national team isn't a difficult one. We have a common goal," Kompany said.

"Germany must qualify; that's clear, and for that you need the best players.

"You win tournaments in the summer - so the players need to be fit and available. So that Germany can achieve something special and perhaps lose to Belgium in the final," he quipped in reference to his home country.

Klopp attended Bayern's Bundesliga season opener on Friday against VfB Stuttgart, whose training he has since also visited, and he named Bayern's appointment of Kompany in 2024 "courageous but super smart.

"He was a world class player and is on his way to becoming a world class coach," Klopp said.
