Texans GM Nick Caserio gives high praise to rookie OL Keylan Rutledge

Houston Texans general manager had several quotes that certainly caught the attention of the public following Tuesday's roster cutdown.

But even with comments surrounding the contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud, Caserio might have opened the public to rookie Keylan Rutledge, a player he's sold on being perhaps the top option on the offensive line entering Week 1's matchup against the Buffalo Bills .

"Honestly, he's probably the best offensive lineman that we have," Caserio said. "We're glad he's here."

A first-round pick out of Georgia Tech, Rutledge was brought into Houston to compete for the starting job. It was a transition role, especially given that he never played the position before following his time at guard with both the Yellow Jackets and at Middle Tennessee State.

So far in camp, Rutledge has been fine at center, but he's thrived when asked to play left guard. In both preseason matchups, he started next to Evan Brown on the left side and excelled in run-blocking sets. Meanwhile, Brown has been servicable as a center and likely will take snaps Week 1 against Buffalo.

"At some point, we're going to say in the end, we feel this is probably the best spot for that player, understanding that those reps that they get at the other position could potentially come into play at some point down the road," Caserio said. "In the end we feel like Keylan right now is the best left guard."

But for Caserio to call Rutledge the team's best offensive lineman, featuring multiple players with Pro Bowl potential, is a high compliment for someone who's yet to take a professional snap. It could prevail and become a reason to believe Houston's offensive line has turned the corner, but say the rookie struggles against Titans All-Pro Jeffery Simmons or newly-signed Dexter Lawrence from Cincinnati?

What does that say about the rest of the line in general?
