The fall prep sports postseason is just around the corner, and athletes throughout the Eugene-Springfield area have continued to produce stellar performances.

Every week, you get to vote for The Register-Guard's Athlete of the Week.

Here are the nominees for this week's boys Athlete of the Week based on performances from Oct. 17-23.

Austyn Hartwig, Triangle Lake cross-country

Nellie Smith, Pleasant Hill cross-country

Information about each nominee is listed below. Vote for the athlete you think is most deserving at registerguard.com/sports. The poll closes at 9 a.m. Thursday.

South Eugene senior Lucy Alkire racked up 35 assists and 12 digs Oct. 20 to lead the Class 6A No. 9 Axe to a 3-1 win over Class 5A No. 10 Churchill.

Sheldon senior setter Addison Brandow recorded 55 assists over the course of two matches last week, helping the Irish to road wins over Willamette and Springfield.

Willamette sophomore defensive midfielder Rose Chunn delivered strong showings in the Wolverines' Oct. 20 0-0 draw against Sheldon and Oct. 22 3-1 win at Churchill.

"She was great in stopping the ball in the middle as well as starting our attack," Willamette coach Christine Guldager said. "She plays with heart and passion each game."

South Eugene senior Sofia Collins tallied 11 kills and eight digs Oct. 20 to lead the Class 6A No. 9 Axe to a 3-1 win over Class 5A No. 10 Churchill.

Creswell senior midfielder Kendall Durflinger scored the winning goal on a header Oct. 21 to lift the Class 3A/2A/1A No. 8 Bulldogs to a 1-0 home win over No. 14 Central Linn.

That goal secured the Mountain Valley Conference title for Creswell.

Triangle Lake sophomore Austyn Hartwig ran a 5,000-meter personal best time of 20 minutes, 28.5 seconds Oct. 21 and finished 12th at the Umpqua Invite.

Hartwig's time is the 14th-fastest in the state this season among Class 2A/1A girls.

Marist Catholic junior defender Lexi Hudson scored a goal Oct. 20 in the Spartans' 9-0 home win over Cottage Grove, and another Oct. 22 in their 8-0 win at North Bend.

"Lexi, who now has seven goals and two assists this season, is our team's fourth-leading scorer as our starting center back," Marist Catholic coach Stefan Schroffner said. "Lexi is the captain of our defensive backline and has been critical in helping Marist's defense notch 12 shutouts in 14 games."

Marist Catholic sophomore midfielder Alyssa McManus delivered an assist Oct. 20 in the Spartans' 9-0 home win over Cottage Grove and also had an assist Oct. 22 in their 8-0 win at North Bend.

"Alyssa has five goals and seven assists, but what makes her valuable is that she is a true box-to-box, sideline-to-sideline midfielder," Marist Catholic coach Stefan Schroffner said. "She is technical with great vision and will simply outwork anyone she plays against. She does all the dirty work for us; helps in defense and attack."

Willamette freshman midfielder Brinly Morrison scored a brace Oct. 22 in the Wolverines' 3-1 road win over Churchill.

Sheldon senior libero Natalie Shoemaker racked up a career-high seven aces Oct. 22 in the Irish's win at Springfield.

Pleasant Hill junior Nellie Smith ran a personal-best 5,000 time of 19:59.1 Oct. 21 to finish eighth at the Umpqua Invite.

Smith's time is the 19th-fastest in the state this season among Class 3A girls.

North Eugene sophomore goalkeeper Madison Stuart played a big role in the Class 5A No. 1 Highlanders' 2-1 win over No. 12 Thurston on Oct. 22.

"Madison was outstanding. Made a couple of big saves, including a one-on-one save," North Eugene coach Jamie Tait said.

North Eugene junior center back Luci Tait helped the Class 5A No. 1 Highlanders secure a close-fought 2-1 win over No. 12 Thurston on Oct. 22.

"She was solid in our backline; won balls out of the air and kept (Thurston's) forwards under pressure," North Eugene coach Jamie Tait said.
