Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll discusses his elbow surgery | Exclusive

Arizona Diamondbacks star Corbin Carroll had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. He spoke with The Republic about it.

Diamondbacks right fielder Corbin Carroll underwent surgery on Thursday, Nov. 5, to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, a minor procedure that he hopes will set back his offseason work by less than a month.

Carroll said he felt "a little bit" of discomfort in the elbow during the season but that the discomfort worsened last week.

"I'm guessing a couple broke off during the season and a couple broke off last week," Carroll told The Arizona Republic Friday, Nov. 6. "Last week was when I really had significant symptoms where it was like, 'Hey this is worth taking a look.'"

He said he had the minimally invasive NanoScope procedure, the same one then-Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal had during this past season that allowed him to return from the injured list in only six weeks.

"I'm hoping to start swinging the bat at the beginning of December," Carroll said.

Earlier this week, Carroll won his first Gold Glove Award after being named a finalist for the second year in a row. He was one of three Diamondbacks to win a Gold Glove this year.

"I think it's rewarding to a lot of the work that I've put in with (outfield coach Dave) McKay," Carroll said. "It's just going to be cool to be able to give McKay something like that as a thank you for all the extra swings that he put in for me and all the extra time."

Carroll typically shagged fly balls with McKay twice a series before games.

Though the right elbow needed the surgery, the bigger issue for Carroll this season was his back, an area he said has been a focus for him over the past month. He said he is trying to get himself in good positions in the weight room in hopes of avoiding similar back problems in the future.

He equated the severity of this week's surgery to the hamate procedure he had at the start of spring training.

"It's the removal of something as opposed to fixing something," he said. "I would say in terms of the pain and all that, so far it's been less than the hamate."

Carroll, 26, is coming off a season in which he hit .239/.328/.467 with 22 homers, 33 doubles and 17 triples.

He said he had not yet begun to make any offseason adjustments with his swing. He had been planning to start hitting in the middle of November but will have to push that back two weeks.
