RB Trey Benson goes unclaimed, reverts to injured reserve

The Arizona Cardinals announced that they waived running back Trey Benson with an injury designation. He went unclaimed off waivers, which means he is back with the Cardinals, but has reverted to injured reserve.

What usually happens in these situations is that a player will eventually be paid an injury settlement and released from IR.

Usually, players waived in this fashion are on the mend from an injury. Benson had not practiced since before the Cardinals' first preseason game. After missing most of last season with a knee injury, from which he tried to come back from late last season and failed, he had his knee flare up again in training camp.

He is technically on the Cardinals, but his time with them is over.

It is a sad end to the promise he had as a third-round pick out of Florida State in 2024.

In two seasons, he played in 17 games and rushed for 451 yards and a touchdown, averaging 4.9 yards per attempt.
