Commanders GM Adam Peters unfairly criticized for one specific comment

Washington Commanders general manager met with the media on Monday to discuss the offseason, the roster and the season ahead. One thing Peters said didn't sit right with some.

"Obviously our fans are passionate, and you love to have passionate fans; that's great," Peters said on Monday. "But there's a lot of stuff we're doing here that maybe they don't see, and a lot of things I'm excited to see in a couple of weeks. We couldn't be more thrilled than to start our season where we're starting it, and it's going to be a great challenge, and we're looking forward to it."

Reading X (formerly Twitter), this Peters' quote did not go over too well. However, I did not interpret Peters' comment as an arrogant professor condescendingly talking down to students he believes are ignorant.

Sometimes we have to remind ourselves when reading literature or listening to a speech, and yes, even in a press conference, "What is the immediate context in which this reply is being spoken?" In other words, one can't simply read an answer and foolishly make a conclusion accurately or reliably unless you recognize the question to which the speaker is responding.

In this case, one inquired, "AP, this one is for you. Simply judging by the tenor and the tone from the fan base over the past week, there's certainly some worry there. My question to you is, 'What gives you hope that you know everything's going to be all right basically with this team, the structure, going forward?'

AP visibly was not thrilled with that question. First of all, there are extremists in every fan base. Some are extremely negative, extremely pessimistic, most is doom and gloom for these people.. Frankly, they are emotionally unreliable people. Then there are fans who are extremely naive and optimistic, never questioning when they should. So how was Peters supposed to respond to how extreme fanatics are venting on social media?

Peters responded by referring back to Quinn's previous response. Peters echoed what Quinn had said about his two new coordinators, to Jayden Daniels having a very good training camp. Peters expressed he is confident in the coaching staff. He also knows their defensive personnel will be better in 2026.

So yes, Peters knows more, much more than the fan base. Yes, he sees more, hears more, interacts more. It's all true. He wasn't being condescending at all on Monday. Now, having said all of that, neither Peters nor any GM should get a free pass. They should all be judged by their personnel moves and their drafts. It's part of the business. I am confident Peters thinks much more about his three drafts for the Commanders than any fans do.
