49ers' Australia trip may be a logistical nightmare for a few players
Weeks is the only snapper on the team, but he was released just before the August 30th deadline to trim down to the 53-man active roster
Imagine prepping for the trip to Melbourne, Australia, for the San Francisco 49ers to face the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday. Then being cut and sent back home before playing a snap. That's exactly what happened to 49ers tight end Brayden Willis on Saturday to make room for long snapper Jon Weeks, who was promoted to the active roster.
Weeks is the only snapper on the team, but he was released just before the August 30th deadline to trim down to the 53-man active roster, leaving the 49ers with zero long snappers. Weeks was, however, added to the practice squad.
Brayden Willis, on the other hand, will hit the waiver wire. It is not yet known whether he has left the country, but if another team claims him, he will have to quickly board a plane and make the trek across the pond back to the States. Reports close to the team have indicated that he could be signed to the 49ers' practice squad and remain with them while in Australia.
The move could mean that 49ers tight end George Kittle is completely healthy after suffering from a torn Achilles tendon back in January. The trip to Australia could turn out to be a logistical nightmare for a few players, as the 49ers also claimed Khalid Kareem off the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad, meaning he will have to make the 21-hour trip to Australia.
