Five key takeaways from Florida's season-opening win over FAU Owls

Florida football opened the 2026 season with a convincing victory over FAU on Saturday night, but the Gators left the matchup with plenty to evaluate heading into the depth of their schedule.

The offense provided several reasons for optimism, particularly with the play of quarterback Aaron Philo, running back Jadan Baugh and a receiving corps that lived up to its preseason expectations.

At the same time, Florida's defense left much to be desired after allowing 21 points to an FAU offense that the Gators should have been able to contain more effectively.

Here are the biggest takeaways from Florida's season-opening 66-21 victory.

Aaron Philo looked solid in his Florida debut

If there were questions about whether Aaron Philo could handle the pressure of being Florida's starting quarterback, he provided plenty of answers Saturday night.

Philo completed 16 of 21 passes for 275 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in his first start for the Gators. More importantly, he consistently showed the poise and cerebral playmaking ability Florida will need from its quarterback as the competition gets tougher.

The transfer quarterback repeatedly used his legs to extend plays and keep the offense moving, eventually finding the end zone on the ground as well. There will obviously be much tougher tests ahead in SEC play, but Philo's debut provided an encouraging look.

Jadan Baugh entered the season with significant expectations, and he wasted little time showing why.

The All-SEC back exploded for 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns against FAU, giving Florida some of its most effortless touchdowns. Baugh was already in the conversation, but tonight's production puts him squarely in the conversation for the Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top running back.

And if he continues producing at this level against SEC competition, the conversation could eventually become much bigger.

Vernell Brown III, receiving corps are formidable weapons

The early returns on the receiving corps are encouraging. Vernell Brown III was particularly impressive, surpassing 100 receiving yards while providing Philo with a reliable yards-after-catch option throughout the night.

If Brown and the rest of the receiving corps continue to perform at a consistent level, Florida could have one of the more dangerous passing attacks in the SEC.

Florida's defense left something to be desired

For as encouraging as the offensive performance was, Florida's defense was arguably the biggest disappointment of the night.

The Gators allowed FAU to score 21 points, a number that should raise some questions considering the expectations surrounding Florida's defense heading into the season.

The program will need to clean up some of the issues that allowed the Owls to find success offensively, particularly before the Gators begin facing the more talented offenses on their schedule.

A 21-point performance isn't enough to erase the positives from a season-opening victory, but it does serve as an early warning and something to look out for as SEC play looms.

Florida's overall performance gives Gator Nation reason to be optimistic

Florida got the result it needed to begin the 2026 season, and the offense provided plenty of reasons for optimism.

Philo looked comfortable in his first start; Baugh immediately established himself as one of the nation's most dangerous running backs and players. The defense, however, remains the biggest question mark.

The Gators won't be able to rely on simply outscoring opponents once SEC play arrives. Saturday's victory was a strong first step in the Sumrall era.
