The Chiefs beat Denver , the Bills beat Houston 36-31, the Ravens dropped 41 on the Colts , and the Bengals won in Week 1 of the 2026 season. After a year in which Kansas City missed the playoffs and Cincinnati struggled, the AFC's four marquee quarterbacks all opened with wins on the same weekend.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter pointed to those results as early confirmation of who will be running the conference race this season predicting four names the rest of the AFC will need to contend with.

Adam Schefter identifies AFC quarterbacks setting early championship standard

Schefter made the comments during his Week 1 breakdown naming Patrick Mahomes , Josh Allen , Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow . According to him, the AFC looked exactly like it has in its best years with the same names at the top and the same gap between them and everyone else.

"We got the Chiefs and Mahomes, the Bills and Allen, the Ravens and Lamar, and the Bengals and Joe Burrow. I'm just telling you. I see it already. It's one week, but it is not too early to say with those quarterbacks and those teams. We're going to be seeing those teams plenty of season. We're going to be talking about those teams plenty of the season," Schefter said .

Allen's win in Houston was something Schefter mentioned as worth noting. The Bills quarterback had lost four straight games in that building, including a prime-time loss last season, before throwing a go-ahead touchdown to Josh Palmer late in a 36-31 victory over one of the better defenses in the league.

"Who thought that Kenneth Walker would do that to Denver? Who thought Josh Allen would go into his own personal house of horrors in Houston where he had lost four games, where he hadn't won, where he got tormented on Thursday night last year, and light up arguably one of the best defenses in football," Schefter said. "I just keep coming back to this."

Kenneth Walker rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown against Denver in Mahomes' return from injury, giving Kansas City a legitimate ground threat alongside its quarterback for the first time in years.

Chiefs and Bills back up Schefter's case with different kinds of wins

Josh Allen's win over Houston ended a major road problem, and Buffalo's 36-31 victory gave its quarterback an important response against a strong defense. Patrick Mahomes also gained a new run-game asset in Kenneth Walker, more weapons around him than he did a season ago, when the Chiefs finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs entirely.

Burrow and Cincinnati returning to the win column also matters. The Bengals were largely absent from the AFC conversation in 2025, and their Week 1 result put them back in the group Schefter is watching.

The Bills, Ravens, Chiefs and Bengals all have the roster depth and quarterback play to sustain early momentum. Jacksonville , Denver, Houston and the Chargers can still enter the picture, but one week of results already separated the contenders from the challengers in Schefter's view.

Whether those four teams are still standing in January is the only question that matters.
