Wigan Warriors: Matt Peet hurt by Super League play-off exit but 'proud' of side

Matt Peet conceded that Wakefield Trinity were "far too good" for his Wigan side in Saturday's Super League play-off semi-final - but he remains "proud" of the Warriors' team and their achievements this season.

Wigan were aiming to win a second domestic treble in three years, having already lifted the Challenge Cup and League Leaders' Shield, and went into the semi-final on a run of 16 successive victories.

But Wakefield's sensational 33-6 win ended their hopes of a third trophy in 2026 and sent Trinity through to their first-ever Grand Final.

"I'm always proud of the group," Wigan head coach Peet told BBC Radio Manchester after the loss.

"We'll be disappointed with the way it's finished and the time to reflect will be in a few weeks, but I'm proud of the group.

Hosts Wigan took the lead in the first half with Brad O'Neill's converted try, but Wakefield responded with 33 unanswered points either side of the interval.

"The night 100% belongs to Wakefield," added Peet. "Any time the season finishes, it's sad, but in that manner... we were off but Wakefield played excellent, which made us look that way.

"We were well beaten in every facet of the game and credit goes to Wakefield. We were prepared for a tough game but they were far too good for us."

Wakefield will play Warrington Wolves in the Grand Final at Old Trafford on Saturday, 3 October (18:00 BST).
