ECISD Athletics Department earns distinction

The Ector County ISD Athletics Department is honored, inspired, and energized by being named The Texas Way District of Distinction this summer. Only 39 Texas school districts received this recognition from the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association (THSADA).

"We are incredibly proud of our kids and coaches," said ECISD Director of Athletics/PE & Health Crystal Day. "This recognition reflects the intentional work they put in every day—not just to be better athletes, but to become better people and equipping them with tools for life that extend far beyond the game."

The Texas Way is a collaboration between athletic directors, coaches, and 2Words Character Development to improve sportsmanship at UIL events, decrease the number of ejections at these events, and strengthen communities and the relationships between coaches, athletics, officials, and fans, a news release said.

"Our families and fans are such an important part of what we do," added Day, who coordinates the district's The Texas Way efforts. "We want them to cheer loud, be proud, and enjoy the competition while helping us continue to create an atmosphere of respect and sportsmanship that our kids can be proud of."

To be considered for The Texas Way District of Distinction honor, school districts had to see equal or fewer ejections last year, strong engagement with The Texas Way Curriculum, community service participation throughout the year, and use of an intentional character development plan for athletics in addition to the Texas Way resources.

"For us, it's about so much more than winning games," Day said. "We are grateful that our coaches are intentional about teaching respect, accountability, character, and how to handle both the wins and the tough moments the right way."
