Studs and duds from Chicago’s embarrassing 31-7 loss to the Packers
Here are the studs and a lot of duds from the Chicago Bears' embarrassing 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers to drop to 3-2 on the year.
What the heck happened to the Chicago Bears ? They dominated the Philadelphia Eagles Week 3 with Case Keenum at quarterback. They won easily against the New York Jets in Week 4 with Tyson Bagent at quarterback. But they apparently did not even bother showing up to the game for Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers.
The turnovers were atrocious. Bagent had two interceptions, Keenum had an interception and lost a fumble and wide receiver Rome Odunze also lost a fumble. Green Bay scored 14 points on those turnovers, which actually is not bad given they only scored off of two turnovers.
Chicago's secondary got smoked by Packers receiver Christian Watson who finished the game with six receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow receiver Matthew Golden also burned the Bears with over 123 yards. Both receivers had a reception of at least 50 yards. Tight end Tucker Kraft had a 46-yard reception. Overall, this defense looked completely unrecognizable.

Here are two studs and a lot of duds from Chicago's biggest loss of the season with some of the duds including Bagent, Odunze, Ben Johnson and cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson.
Chicago finished this game with two sacks. Both of them came on Green Bay's final drive before halftime and they both came from Austin Booker. On a day that was otherwise a dismal day for the Bears' defense.
Devin Bush actually had himself a good day with eight total tackles including two tackles for loss. He did not have any critical mistakes or horrible plays and that is good enough to be a stud on Chicago's defense in this game. So far, Bush has been a great offseason addition for the Bears.
Tyson Bagent did not have a great day against the Jets in Week 4. However, there was hope that he could rebound in this game against Chicago's biggest rival. He did not. His decision making was not great. He only had 87 passing yards. Bagent was sacked twice and threw two interceptions. Eventually, he was benched for Keenum but the damage was done. Chicago is not going to win many games with Bagent at quarterback playing like this. Luckily, the Bears could get starter Caleb Williams back next week against the Atlanta Falcons.
Chicago is undefeated against teams outside of the NFC North. However, in both division games, the playcalling for the Bears has been questionable. In this game especially, it was painful to watch some of the plays because of how quickly they fell apart. The Bears have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball to have an amazing season, but not if they look like a completely different team against division opponents. Hopefully the Bears can get back in the win column in Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons; they will need it given every team in the NFC North has a winning record after five weeks.
For any receiver in the NFL but especially someone who is supposed to be Chicago's top wide receiver, he should be better about ball security. Rome Odunze dropped a completion on third down that forced the Bears to punt, but his most disappointing play was the fumble. He already had the first down; he just needed to go down in that moment. Odunze also finished the game with just three receptions despite being agreed nine times. Another poor showing from Odunze.
Honestly, the Bears might be better off putting Jaylon Johnson on the bench. He could not contain Packers receiver Christian Watson to save his life, causing Watson to finish the day with 143 receiving yards and two touchdowns both of which were over 40 yards. Johnson is supposed to be Chicago's next player in the secondary but right now, he is playing like their worst player.
Tyrique Stevenson could not guard Christian Watson to save his life either. On Watson's first touchdown, Stevenson was the one in coverage. He ended up leaving the game with an injury and maybe injuries have been bothering him all season. But if that is the case, perhaps he should be on the bench.
With Kyle Monangai out, Chicago went to Roschon Johnson to step up and be a change of pace running back for the Bears. He basically got nowhere on his rushing attempts. Johnson ran the ball five times for six yards; his longest run was three yards. He did end up with five receptions for 34 yards which is not bad. But, as a running back, he needs to run the ball better. Chicago had a few backs who impressed in the preseason, maybe they should get a shot at the active roster instead of Roschon Johnson.
