Christian Watson and Matthew Golden are making a strong case as one of the NFL's top receiving duos. The Green Bay Packers ' two playmakers have been productive through five weeks, with Watson recording 26 catches for 474-yards and six touchdowns, putting him on pace for roughly 1,600 yards. Golden has added 24 receptions for 397 yards and two scores, a pace that would put him near 1,350 receiving yards.
The Packers have enjoyed several productive wide receiver tandems this century, with Davante Adams, Donald Driver and Greg Jennings among the notable names. However, the last time two Packers receivers each topped 1,000 yards in the same season was 2014, when Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb reached the milestone.
Green Bay made a statement with its 31-7 rout of Chicago , showcasing the firepower of its offense against their bitter rivals. Even so, Matt LaFleur is keeping expectations in check, knowing the Packers must deliver more strong performances before they can consider themselves a proven contender.
"Well, we'll see," remarked the Packers head coach.
"You're only as good as your last game. They were pretty good this week."
Matthew Golden and Christian Watson with the Packers
Watson has the size and athleticism to make a major impact, but recurring injuries have interrupted the progress he showed at the start of his career. Golden, meanwhile, entered the league as a first round selection last year. His rookie campaign fell short of expectations, yet his talent suggested he could eventually become a key part of Green Bay's offense.
Rather than spreading targets evenly across a large group of receivers, Green Bay has leaned more heavily on its top options this season, giving Jordan Love clearer go-to targets. Tight end Tucker Kraft also remains a valuable option in the passing game. The Packers sit at 3-2, but they face a tough challenge in the NFC North, where Chicago and Detroit are also competing and Minnesota has opened the season 5-0.
