Creetown pub used in cult film The Wicker Man up for auction

A pub in the south of Scotland where scenes for the 1973 horror film The Wicker Man were shot is going up for auction.

The interior of the Ellangowan Hotel in Creetown was the fictional Green Man in the movie and had actress Britt Ekland as a barmaid.

It has been closed for a number of years and plans to convert it into short-term let apartments were approved last year.

Future Property Auctions is looking to sell the property - with a starting price of £165,000 - on Thursday.

The hotel was one of several different parts of Scotland which featured in the film, which has divided opinion for decades.

It has been described as "the Citizen Kane of horror movies" but also derided as one of the 10 worst films ever made.

Many local people featured as extras when filming took place at locations in Dumfries and Galloway, including in the hotel.

Prior to the Covid lockdown, there were plans to capitalise on the hotel's starring role in the cult 1970s film.

However, they failed to materialise and the most recent proposals approved by the local council would see it turned into short-term let accommodation.

The Wicker Man celebrated its 50th anniversary three years ago and has been dividing audiences since its release.

It tells the story of a Christian police officer sent to a remote Scottish island community to investigate the disappearance of a local girl.

The south of Scotland links to the film were celebrated for many years with the Wicker Man music festival.
