With the Illinois High School Association girls and boys golf regionals beginning this week, this is a look at where teams in The State Journal-Register's coverage area are heading this postseason.

Girls regionals , in the IHSA's two-class system, are Tuesday, Sept. 29. Boys regionals , a part of a three-class system, are Wednesday. Sectionals for boys and girls are Monday, Oct. 5 with the IHSA state finals held the weekend of Oct. 9-10 at five different courses.

The girls state finals are held at Red Tail Run (1A) and Hickory Point (2A) golf courses in Decatur. The boys state finals are at Vista Prairie (1A), Weibring (2A) and The Den at Fox Creek (3A) golf courses in Bloomington-Normal.

How do teams and individuals advance? In regionals, the top three teams advance to sectionals. If multiple teams tie for third place, ties will be broken. The top 10 individuals not on qualifying teams will also advance, but ties for 10th place will be determined with an on-course playoff.

In sectionals, the top three teams (ties will be broken again) qualify for the state tournament. Top 10 players who didn't advance to state as part of a team will also qualify for state, and any ties for the final spot will be determined with an on-course playoff.

At state, the field will be reduced to the top eight teams (and ties), along with top 40 individuals (including ties) not on an advancing team, after the first day of action.

Here is the full breakdown of where everyone in our area will be playing this week.

Metamora qualifiers will advance to the Cambridge Sectional at Valley View Club Cambridge.

Petersburg PORTA, Taylorville, Monticello and Mattoon qualifiers will advance to the Rochester Sectional at Lincoln Greens Golf Course.

Carlyle qualifiers will advance to the Roxana Sectional at Belk Park Golf Course.

Normal U-High qualifiers will advance to the Normal West Sectional at Ironwood Golf Course.

Tri-Valley and Meridian qualifiers will advance to the Monticello Sectional at University of Illinois (Orange Course).

PORTA qualifiers will advance to the Peoria Sectional at Kellogg Golf Course.

Brown County and Mount Olive qualifiers will advance to the Waterloo Gibault Sectional at Annbriar Golf Course.

Marquette and Jacksonville qualifiers will advance to the Quincy Notre Dame Sectional at Spring Lake Country Club.

Collinsville qualifiers will advance to the O'Fallon Sectional at Stonewolf Golf Club.
