Duke finished 9-5 last season but won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and the Sun Bowl over Arizona State. Bypassed for a College Football Playoff berth, the Blue Devils start fresh at quarterback this season with San Jose State transfer Walker Eget replacing Darian Mensah, who transferred to Miami. The receiving corps was revamped with transfers Jared Richardson and Javen Nicholas while Nate Sheppard leads the running attack. The defense looks to improve after finishing 121st in total defense a season ago.

Tulane earned its first ever CFP appearance after winning the American championship, closing out an 11-3 season with a loss at Ole Miss in the first round. Will Hall moves up from pass game coordinator to head coach after Jon Sumrall left for Florida, with Houston transfer Zeon Chriss-Gremillion getting the opening week start at quarterback over Kadin Semonza. Running back Jamauri McClure injured an ankle on Aug. 7 and his status for Saturday is unclear. If he can't go, Maurice Turner will carry the load.

The Green Wave beat the Blue Devils 34-27 at home last season, tying the all-time series between the teams at three games apiece.
