‘Cats go undefeated in non-con play with win over Tulane

MANHATTAN ( KSNT ) — K-State stays undefeated in non-conference play.

The Wildcats defeated the Tulane Green Wave Saturday afternoon, 31-20.

Tulane opened up the scoring just under the eight-minute mark with a nine-yard quarterback run for a touchdown to lead 7-0.

K-State would not score in the first quarter.

In the second, Luis Rodriguez kicked in a 23-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3.

A few minutes later, running back Jay Harris had a one-yard rush to give the 'Cats the 10-7 lead.

With a little over two minutes remaining, Avery Johnson would pick up a huge 66-yard gain to set up the first down. He'd rush again the following play, this time for seven yards, to grab the touchdown. K-State has the 17-7 lead.

A 58-yard field goal right before the first half would get the Green Wave within a score, as they trailed 17-10.

Harris picked up his second one-yard rushing touchdown to open up the third, building the Wildcat lead to 24-10.

Tulane would grab another big field goal, this time from 53-yards out, to make things 24-13.

In the fourth, Johnson would pick up another rushing touchdown, this one for 12 yards, to extend the 'Cats lead to 31-13.

A 25-yard touchdown reception with just under three minutes left in the game would see Tulane cut the lead down to 31-20, but they would be unable to come any closer as K-State secured the win.

Johnson was 21-for-28 with 227 yards in the air, 152 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns.

On the defense, Darien Whitaker picked up 1.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss. Gabe Powers also had 1.5 tackles for loss.

The 'Cats will open up conference play next weekend when they travel out to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
