Green Bay Packers: Jordan Love can cook, but his teammates need to allow him to do so

When Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs was arrested earlier this year, many fans assumed he would be suspended by the NFL. Currently on the commissioner's exempt list after pleading no contest to charges related to domestic violence, Jacobs has yet to play for the Packers this season. Obviously, this is what many expected.

To that end, fans were excited for the notion that star quarterback Jordan Love would be allowed to "cook." That is, head coach Matt LaFleu r would give Love more control of the offense by letting him call more plays on his own and/or throw the ball more.

In theory, it is a fantastic idea. In practice (games), it has been a struggle.

In order for Love, or any quarterback for that matter, to be successful, he needs his offensive line to protect him and his wide receivers to catch the passes that he throws to them. Over the course of the first two games, this has not happened on a consistent basis.

At 1-1, Green Bay has the entire season ahead of them. However, injuries and poor play on the offensive side of the ball have fans concerned that the year could slip away from them.

In Week One, for instance, the Packers offensive line allowed the Minnesota Vikings to pressure Love 22 times. While they improved in Week Two against the New York Jets , allowing just six pressures, Love's average 2.41-2.45 seconds time to throw is the lowest (worst) in the league.

If Love is given even just a little extra time to throw, it will allow plays to develop down field, pass catchers to get open, and the quarterback himself to be in a better physical position to throw.

At the same time, his pass catchers need to, well, catch. Through the first two games of the 2026 NFL season, Green Bay has dropped seven passes.

These mental and technique errors can be fixed. Putting a healthy offensive line in front of Love would also be beneficial. Unfortunately, that has proven to be a challenge through the first two weeks of the season, and it is not exactly clear what the Packers' plan is going forward has injuries continue to stack up.

All this to say that Love is more than capable of being an MVP-caliber quarterback. However, even the best QB's in the league will not be very productive if they do not have time to throw and/or their receivers do not catch passes that hit them in the hands.

Everyone, including Packers players, want to see Love cook in 2026. His teammates need to allow him to do so.
