Green Bay Packers: Christian Watson details what the team must fix after Week 1 Vikings loss

Christian Watson caught both of the touchdowns the Green Bay Packers scored on Sunday and did not want credit for either one.

Watson took a Jordan Love throw 81 yards to the end zone with 7:54 left in the first quarter, then caught a two-yard score with 18 seconds left in the first half that sent Green Bay into the locker room up 19-10. The Packers led 22-10 in the third quarter and lost 39-22 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

"Didn't do enough for us to win the football game," Watson said. "Obviously it was super excited coming in from the first half, feeling like everything was going the right way, but it's hard to be proud of anything when it didn't amount to anything for the team. So it's a tough one."

Minnesota scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, three touchdowns inside a span of 2 minutes and 39 seconds. Watson said the room saw it coming and could not stop it.

"Yeah, the coach said it best," he said. "Momentum is a strong thing, and we didn't respond, so once they got that momentum, they just kept on going."

He also declined to hang the loss on Matt LaFleur's decision to take points off the board and go for it on fourth-and-1 in the fourth quarter.

"I don't think that one play was anything," Watson said. "I think there was a lot of plays that kind of escalated into the result of the game today. But I think in every situation, you've got to find a way to execute better. And once it comes down to execution and we didn't execute, we needed to."

Watson on finishing: 'The only answer is yes'

Finishing games was the offseason emphasis in Green Bay. Watson got the question everyone in the building knew was coming, and he did not dodge it.

"I think the only answer is yes after a result like today," Watson said. "I think it just comes down to execution. We've got to find a way to execute in those critical moments. We've got to find a way, all 11, to be on the same page on offense, defense, special teams, everything. It comes down to crucial moments in the game, and we've got to find a way to come out on top of those if we want to come out on top of the game."

On the penalties, of which Green Bay had 12 for 98 yards to Minnesota's three for 15, Watson went where Tucker Kraft and LaFleur went.

"It was huge," he said. "We can't put stuff like that in the ref's hands. We've got to find a way to be disciplined and play sound football."

One game into a season, Watson signed a long deal to be part of

Watson entered Sunday on a four-year extension worth a reported $92.5 million, one of several deals Green Bay handed out this offseason on a list that also includes Jayden Reed , Devonte Wyatt and, as of Saturday, Tucker Kraft .

He was asked how a team digests a loss like this with 17 games still in front of it.

"We've just got to be open to critiquing ourselves and being hard on ourselves," Watson said. "Because obviously it's only one game, but we've got to be able to learn from the mistakes, learn from the whole game, and find a way to come out on top. Otherwise, we don't want to turn the wrong direction. We want to find a way to get back to where we're at."

Love finished 21-of-42 for 387 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Green Bay outgained Minnesota 419-239 and ran for 66 yards on 21 carries.

The Packers return to action against the New York Jets on Sunday at noon CT.
