Tony Romo is still trying to crack the world of professional golf. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is an exceptional golfer. His handicap is around +3, and he regularly dominates high-profile celebrity events, winning the American Century Championship multiple times.

However, when he tests his game against professional fields through sponsor exemptions on the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour, the gap between elite amateurs and touring professionals becomes apparent.

He shot a 77 in his PGA Tour debut and has consistently missed the cut in professional tournaments. Under the bright lights of the PGA Tour, even minor holes in your game get exposed.

He recently went through pre-qualifying at Q-School in Oklahoma, and once again it didn't quite go to plan.

How Tony Romo performed in Q-School pre-qualifying event

Romo's pre-qualifying event in Oklahoma looked promising for a while. The 46-year-old was in contention to make it into the top 37 and advance through the pre-qualifying stage. He was T46 with nine holes to play after a birdie on the ninth.

However, it all came undone. Romo shot a 74 in his third and final round to finish nine-over par, four shots above the cutline as play concluded. It was a disappointing end to what could have been a huge success for Romo.

Romo has competed in PGA Tour Q-School pre-qualifying five times and has played in several PGA Tour tournaments with a sponsor's exemption. He's also tried to qualify for the US Open several times to no avail.

But to make matters worse, while he was competing in Oklahoma, CBS announced it was parting ways with Romo, who previously commentated on their NFL coverage. Romo was arrested in late July for a DUI while leaving the Wisconsin Amateur Golf Championship.

CBS initially placed Romo on leave for the start of the NFL season, but has now made the move permanent by officially cutting ties with the former Cowboys star.

They said in a statement: "CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward."

So it didn't go his way on the course, and CBS let him go off the course. A poor day all round for Romo.
