Southern Miss QB Ethan Hampton likely out vs Tulane, coach Blake Anderson says

Southern Miss football starting quarterback Ethan Hampton is unlikely to play in Week 4 against Tulane .

Golden Eagles' coach Blake Anderson provided an update on Hampton's injury status on Sept. 21, two days after the quarterback injured his throwing hand against UConn . Anderson called Hampton's hand injury "pretty significant" and said he does not expect him to play against the Green Wave on Sept. 26.

"He's beat up," Anderson said. "We do not anticipate him being able to squeeze and throw a football this week."

Hampton did not play in the second half of Southern Miss ' 48-20 loss to the Huskies. During the first half, Hampton hit his throwing hand on another player's helmet and was unable to hold a football at halftime. After the game, Anderson said that Hampton did not break any bones.

The senior quarterback injured the same hand on Aug. 15, suffering a bone bruise during the Golden Eagles ' first scrimmage of the preseason. Hampton missed two weeks of practice as he recovered from the injury.

Anderson is unsure about what Hampton's recovery timeline will look like this time.

"Don't know how long this thing will last," Anderson said. "It's a little different than last (time). It's in the same area, but not the exact same. We're still getting some more images back to find out exactly what all is wrong, but he's clearly not in a position to play."

Hampton has 419 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and four interceptions this season.

Southern Miss (1-2) will play Tulane (1-2) at Yulman Stadium on Sept. 26 (6 p.m. CT, ESPN+).

Senior quarterback Landry Lyddy replaced Hampton in the second half against UConn. He completed 14 of 25 passes for 194 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

"Lyddy came in and did a pretty good job in his absence," Anderson said. "I have no doubt he'll do everything he can to be prepared."

Lyddy competed with Hampton for the starting quarterback job throughout the preseason. He also served as the Golden Eagles' backup in 2025, playing in six games and starting against Texas State on Nov. 11.

In his lone start last year, he completed 29 of 44 passes for 267 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Southern Miss lost the game 41-14.

Sophomore quarterback John White will move from third-string to backup quarterback, and freshman Hugh Price will be the team's new third-string.
