· 588 words

There won't be a more anticipated game in college football Saturday, Oct. 10 than Alabama-Georgia , a top-10 matchup that will have the nation's attention (6:30 p.m. CT, ABC). It will be the fourth time the rivals have met since UA coach Kalen DeBoer's arrival in 2024. The Crimson Tide has taken two of the three, but was drummed by the Bulldogs in the SEC title game last December. Here are some questions and thoughts about the game from the Sounding Board (email below to join), a group of Tuscaloosa News readers who participate in the occasional mailbag column.

Derek from Indianapolis writes : There has been a noticeable difference in preparation, attention to detail, development and execution this year. The coaches would say there always has been, but this year it's actually coming to fruition. What would you contribute that to?

Hey Derek : I would identify two factors here; one, the maturity of the transfer class. That's not a given from year to year, and in fact, it's often lacking. This group places team success at a high priority. Secondly, there is every indication coach Kalen DeBoer hit home runs with his offseason coaching hires, most of which were on the offensive side. The most impactful of those have been offensive line coach Adrian Klemm and tight ends coach Richard Owens, who've made a transformational impact at their respective positions.

Monte from Brooklyn writes : Am I wrong to think that the secondary has not lived up to its preseason billing? Do you think they can get better?

Hey Monte : Notwithstanding some ugly hiccups against Florida State , I'd mostly disagree. The starters — Zabien Brown, Dijon Lee, Bray Hubbard, Keon Sabb and Red Morgan — have given up some big pass plays but have also been opportunistic with turnovers. There is also some stellar depth developing rather quickly.

Jeff from Montgomery writes : What's the next step in Keelon Russell's development as a quarterback? He already seems so polished.

Hey Jeff : It's getting hard to pick nits with Russell's game now that he's cleaned up early-season issues with ball security and self-preservation (he's now finishing runs with a slide). His pocket awareness is improving by the week, which is leading to smarter decisions and more explosive plays. He'll still hold the ball too long on occasion, but he's been nothing short of elite as a passer.

Samantha from Atlanta writes : What has been the biggest difference in the improvement of the pass rush this year?

Hey Samantha : Devan Thompkins, to be frank, has been better than I expected, and is on a pace to have a far more productive season than he did at Southern Cal a year ago. He's not the only reason the pass rush is better, but what it needed was a Robin to Yhonzae Pierre's Batman, and Thompkins has been just that. Pockets are shrinking from the interior, owing largely to Thompkins, Terrence Green, London Simmons and others.

Drew from Mobile writes : When will EJ Crowell take on a bigger role in the running back rotation?

Hey Drew : It could happen as early as the Georgia game, if offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb's Monday remarks are telling. I wrote about this earlier in the week ; the freshman is still learning the offense, but he's also too good to keep under wraps.
