Bermuda Championship: Ireland's Seamus Power misses out in Monday finish as Austin Smotherman claims PGA Tour play-off win
Austin Smotherman defeated Seamus Power on the third play-off hole to claim a second PGA Tour title in as many starts; Bermuda Championship was turned into a 54-hole tournament after Sunday's play was postponed due to strong winds
Smotherman and Power held a share of the 54-hole lead at Port Royal Golf Course, where Sunday's play was postponed due to strong winds before the final round was cancelled due to more poor weather.
It left both players tied on 16 under and returning on Monday morning for a sudden-death play-off, with both players making par - in breezy conditions - on the first two extra holes on the par-three 16th.
The hole location was changed ahead of the next extra hole, where a Power bogey meant a two-putt par was enough for Smotherman to close out victory and add to his Bank of Utah Championship title earlier this month.
" We're out here playing an incredible sport in a beautiful spot," Smotherman said after his win. "Whatever things are going to be thrown at us, Zak [Williamson, caddie] and I were going to be on top of our game.
"Yesterday [Sunday] I felt like we handled everything pretty well and the tour has been great, communicating what's going to happen today for us. Once we got that news, it was nice to know what's going on. To come out on top is a cherry on top of that, so pretty awesome."
How Smotherman edged out Power in Bermuda
Smotherman had followed an opening-round 65 with successive 66s over the next two days to move into a share of the lead, with Power posting a four-under 67 on Saturday to also get to 16 under.
The PGA Tour said on Sunday evening that, due to an 'unfavourable weather forecast and uncertainty surrounding the completion of the entire final round', the tournament would be declared as a 54-hole event.
The play-off was played on loop on the 178-yard 16th on Monday morning, where Smotherman produced a good up and down from right of the green to match Power's two-putt par on the first extra hole.
Power splashed out of the sand to five feet and made his par on the second, where Smotherman found the green and two-putted from distance, with the pin location changed and the yardage cut to 152 yards before they faced the hole for a third time.
Momentum moved Smotherman's way when Power sent his iron into the left rough and then barely advanced his ball onto the green with his second, leading to a bogey as Smotherman two-putted from 15 feet to add another victory.
Smotherman becomes the eighth multiple winner this season and first to win successive PGA Tour events since Matt Fitzpatrick, while the 54-hole tournament is the first on the PGA Tour since the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
The PGA Tour heads to Mexico for the VidantaWorld Mexico Championship, beginning Thursday at Vidanta Vallarta and where Brian Campbell returns as defending champion.
