Timberwolves officially acquire $24M former first-rounder to make room for Jonathan Kuminga

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been pretty active throughout the summer, especially after acquiring LaMelo Ball . The organization is finally giving Anthony Edwards a legitimate supporting cast that could very well make a deep run in the postseason.

The Timberwolves were not done adding to the team, as they recently made another significant offseason move by signing Jonathan Kuminga.

" Jonathan Kuminga has agreed to a two-year, $13 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves , plus a player option, agent Aaron Turner tells ESPN. Kuminga will be a starter alongside Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert on the West contender," ESPN's Shams Charania wrote.

However, the deal cannot go through until Minnesota has enough financial flexibility to sign Kuminga. The Timberwolves recently made a trade with the Utah Jazz that brought them a former first-round pick while sending Josh Green to Utah. The deal was made in an effort to open up enough room for Kuminga to sign.

"The Minnesota Timberwolves have traded Josh Green and cash to the Utah Jazz for Cody Williams and John Konchar , the teams announced Saturday. The Timberwolves are expected to keep Williams, the No. 10 pick in 2024, and waive-and-stretch Konchar, sources told ESPN. Saturday is the final day to waive a player and stretch out his guaranteed salary over multiple seasons," Charania wrote.

The trade was quickly made official after it happened, with the Timberwolves officially welcoming Williams to Minnesota.

"Welcome to Minnesota, Cody," Minnesota posted.

Williams will be a great depth piece for the Timberwolves as he continues to develop his game. This was a nice deal for Minnesota, as it will allow the team to sign Kuminga while also adding a young player with plenty of potential to develop.

Williams is currently on a $24 million rookie contract. The Timberwolves' depth is going to be very good this season, and it could give opposing teams fits. Minnesota is clearly going all in on its future, and adding Williams was another strong move for the organization.
