Wout van Aert wins stage 13 of the Vuelta a España

Wout van Aert won stage 13 of the Vuelta a España from a breakaway with a big helping hand from his British team-mate Matthew Brennan who finished third.

Van Aert beat Valentin Paret-Peintre in a two-up sprint after the pair burst clear with 3.7km left of the 193km stage from Almunecar to Loja.

Before then Brennan, a winner of three sprint finishes in this Vuelta so far, had helped Van Aert soften up the remnants of a huge breakaway - which numbered 43 riders at one point - with a series of attacks in a tactical battle.

It was a fourth career Vuelta stage win for Visma Lease-a-Bike's Van Aert, and first since he crashed out of this race while leading both the points and king of the mountains classifications two years and one day ago.

There was no change at the very top of the general classification where Enric Mas leads by one minute 45 seconds from Primož Roglič, with Scotland's Oscar Onley sitting fifth overall.
