Title-chasing Nottinghamshire lose Kyle Verreynne ahead of crucial County Championship run-in

Nottinghamshire’s County Championship title push has suffered a blow after South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne was recalled early by Cricket South Africa, ruling him out of the club’s final three matches of the season.Verreynne, 29, is in his third stint with Nottinghamshire and had initially agreed to play in all of the club’s red-ball fixtures this summer. However, his central contract commitments with South Africa take priority as the Proteas prepare for a three-Test home series against Australia.His final appearance for Nottinghamshire this season will come against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge, before he returns to South Africa.Verreynne departure comes at crucial stageVerreynne’s departure comes at a crucial stage of Nottinghamshire’s campaign. They currently sit second in the County Championship, four points behind leaders Somerset and one point ahead of third-placed Warwickshire, with just three rounds remaining.The club will now have to manage the final stretch of the title race without their first-choice wicketkeeper, with fixtures against Hampshire, Sussex and Yorkshire still to come.Despite his early departure, Verreynne said he would continue to follow Nottinghamshire’s title challenge closely.“I think I've said it so many times, the club's got a really special place. It's got a special place to me, so I'll be watching closely.”He added:“The team's in a good position at the moment, playing some really good cricket. I think it's going to be quite an exciting run-in, so I'll be keeping a close eye.”Mick Newell acknowledges CSA’s decisionNottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell admitted that losing Verreynne at this point of the season was far from ideal, although the club understood South Africa’s position.“It’s not ideal that we’re losing Kyle at this point in the season, but we understand the decision made by Cricket South Africa, and he returns with our best wishes for a busy winter.”Newell also praised Verreynne’s contribution during his latest spell with the club, saying his performances had helped Nottinghamshire put themselves in a strong position heading into the final weeks of the Championship.“We’ve been very happy to have Kyle with us for most of the summer, during which his contributions have put us in a strong position as we head towards the final few matches,” he said.With several South African players being recalled from county cricket ahead of the Australia series, Nottinghamshire will now look for a replacement for Verreynne.“There’s always a lot of hard work being done behind the scenes to make sure we’re prepared for every outcome, and we hope to confirm a replacement for Kyle as soon as we’re able to,” Newell added.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
