Jos Buttler ruled out of England's third ODI vs Sri Lanka with injury as Surrey's Dan Lawrence called into squad

An ECB spokesperson said: "Surrey batter Dan Lawrence has been called into the England Men's squad for Sunday's third Metro Bank ODI against Sri Lanka.

"Jos Buttler has been ruled out due to the hamstring injury he suffered in the second Metro Bank ODI at Headingley last night [Thursday] and will undergo further assessment."

Lawrence has been withdrawn from Surrey's County Championship fixture against Somerset and is set to train with England at The Oval on Saturday morning.

Sri Lanka showed great fight to halt the hosts' chase in the second ODI and secure a 16-run victory at Headingley, levelling the three-match series at 1-1. Buttler played a decisive role in the hosts' chase before his injury ruled him out of the series decider.

Buttler had looked set to guide the hosts towards victory before pulling up in the 38th over with England 254-4. He was forced to retire hurt but returned to the crease in the 48th over in a final attempt to rescue the chase. Despite the injury, he went on to make 69 before being dismissed.

Will Jacks (52), Rehan Ahmed (0), Gus Atkinson (16) and Jamie Overton (2) also fell as the hosts' hopes faded. England managed just one four and one six from the 37th over onwards as Sri Lanka's bowlers tightened the pressure to seal a hard-fought win.

With the series finely poised at 1-1, the hosts must now regroup for the decider without Buttler, who played a central role in their second ODI chase.
