GUWAHATI: Shubman Gill produced a breathtaking batting masterclass to smash the fastest double century in ODI cricket history as India chased down West Indies’ imposing 406-run target with 39 balls to spare in the second ODI at Barsapara Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday. The eight-wicket win, second on the trot, also sealed the three-match series in the hosts’ favour.Gill remained unbeaten on 223 (133 balls, 28x4, 8x6) eclipsing Ishan Kishan’s previous mark of a 126-ball double century against Bangladesh. It was Gill’s second ODI double ton, after his 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023, leaving him behind only Rohit Sharma, who has three, on the list of Indian batters with multiple double centuries.Reaching 200-run mark (117 balls), Gill had earlier raced to his 11th ODI century in just 62 balls, setting the tone for an extraordinary assault. He continued to find boundaries at will, combining precise cuts and drives with powerful strokes all around the park as India kept the pressure firmly on the West Indies attack. At the other end, Rohit Sharma provided the perfect launchpad with a 101 off 75 balls. The opener completed his 35th ODI century and, in the process, crossed 12,000 runs in the format, becoming only the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli and the seventh batter overall to reach the milestone.Rohit was dismissed immediately after reaching three figures, trapped lbw by Jayden Seales. He had earlier been given a reprieve on 84 when Keacy Carty dropped him at deep mid-wicket. Gill and Rohit’s opening stand of 255 runs fell just three runs short of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly’s all-time record of 258 runs scored against Kenya in 2001.Virat Kohli made 29 before falling while attempting to guide a bouncer. Gill, however, remained in complete command. His unbeaten knock carried India to 406/2 and their highest successful ODI chase, surpassing their previous best of 362/1 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013. The victory was also the highest successful chase on Indian soil and the second-highest successful chase in ODI cricket. South Africa’s 438/9 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006 remains the benchmark.India’s remarkable pursuit followed an extraordinary batting display from Windies, who posted 405/7 — their highest ODI total against India. For the first time in their ODI history, three West Indies batters scored centuries in the same innings. John Campbell struck 101 off 68 balls (9x4, 5x6), captain Shai Hope made 104 off 94 (8x4, 3x6), while Amir Jangoo top-scored with a 114 off 77 (13x3, 3x6)Stay updated with the latest Asian Games 2026 news, check the Asian Games medal tally and complete Asian Games schedule.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
