'We will replicate this at Olympics': BFI chief hails India's boxing show at Asian Games

India’s strong boxing campaign at the Asian Games has given the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) confidence ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.BFI president Ajay Singh praised the Indian boxers after the team secured six medals from 11 events, including three finalists. He said the Asian Games field is close to what boxers face at the Olympics.Six medals from 11 eventsIndia added three more bronze medals on Wednesday through Priya Ghanghas, Narender and Kapil Pokhariya, who lost their respective semifinal bouts.Lovlina Borgohain, Ankush Dahiya and Parveen Hooda have already reached their respective finals and will fight for gold.“We've got six medals in this Asian Games out of 11 events. Last time we got four medals out of 13 events that were held. So we've done considerably better than the last time,” Singh said.He also pointed out that three Indian boxers reaching the finals was a big achievement given the quality of competition at the Asian Games.“The fact that three boxers are in the finals now, I think, is an incredible achievement given that the Asian Games for boxing is very similar to the Olympics,” he said.‘Performance can be replicated at Olympics’Singh believes the performance in the Asian Games can give a clear indication of what India can achieve at the Olympics.“All the top countries in the world are in the Asian Games. So whatever performance we are doing here, it's very possible that this will be replicated in the Olympics,” he said.“So getting six medals, out of which three are now in the finals, is an incredible achievement. And we are hoping that tomorrow or day after, when the finals are held, we convert some of those finalists into golds,” he added.Priya, Narender and Kapil settle for bronzePriya, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, lost 1-4 to China's Yang Chengyu in the women's 60kg semifinal. Priya attacked from the start but could not do enough to convince the judges across the three rounds.Narender also finished with a bronze medal in the men's +90kg category. He lost 0-5 to Kazakhstan's reigning world champion Oralbay in the semifinal.Kapil's campaign ended with a bronze medal after he lost 1-4 to Uzbekistan's world champion Turabek Khabibullaev in the men's 90kg semifinal.Three chances for goldIndia still have three boxers in the fight for gold.
