Nico Carrillo knocks out Chinese star Zhou Jiaqiang in the second round of their featherweight tussle at Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium, proving that his Muay Thai skills brilliantly translated to the kickboxing
The newly crowned ONE featherweight Muay Thai world champion answered questions over how his renowned knockout power would translate from four-ounce gloves to the kickboxing ranks by overwhelming Zhou at Lumpinee Stadium on Saturday morning.
Carrillo had to weather a bright start from the Chinese striker, who enjoyed success with sharp combinations and slick movement during the opening round.
But the Scot shifted through the gears in the second after being caught with a front kick to the face.
Responding instantly, Carrillo unleashed a barrage of punches and forced Zhou onto the back foot as the contest turned into a firefight.
The 27-year-old gradually broke down his opponent with heavy shots to the head and body, a series of left hooks to the midsection proving particularly damaging.
With Zhou trapped in the corner and running on empty, Carrillo closed the show with another sustained assault.
The Chinese fighter eventually fell to the canvas and was unable to beat the count, prompting the referee to wave off the contest at 2:47 of the second round.
The victory was the 30th of Carrillo's professional career and an ideal start to his pursuit of world titles in two sports.
