Payton Talbott added another big name to his growing resume with a first-round TKO win over Deiveson Figueiredo in the UFC 332 co-main event.
Talbott asserted himself early in the fight, flooring Figueiredo in the opening exchange. He put the former champion on the floor with a right hand and nearly finished the fight right there.
Figueiredo survived that opening attack, but things didn't get much better for him. He was floored by a knee and Talbott ultimately did enough for the referee to call an end to the bout.
Talbott continues to make a strong case for his rise up the ranks in the division. The 28-year-old is now 6-1 in the UFC with wins over former champions in Henry Cejudo and Figueiredo in his last two fights.
The biggest issue for the rising contender has been inactivity. This is his first fight since beating Cejudo last December.
There was speculation surrounding matchups with Cory Sandhagen and Sean O'Malley. However, neither materialized. This time, Talbott wants to stay busy and focus climbing the ranks.
"Definitely rankings," Talbott told CBS Sports when asked what he seeks in his next opponent. "I don't have a particular fighter yet, but I should think of one because they'll probably ask me. I want to be more active next year."
There should definitely be opportunities available. Many of the top names in the division are without a fight right now including O'Malley, Song Yadong and Mario Bautista.
Expect Talbott to be in position to make a serious run at the title next year if he stays busy.
