Canelo vs. Mbilli weigh-in results: Canelo Alvarez comes in lighter than WBC champ for comeback bout
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has cleared his final hurdle before Saturday's comeback bout against WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli.
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has cleared his final hurdle before Saturday's comeback bout against WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli .
Alvarez and Mbilli both met their required weights Friday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, rendering their championship bout official. Alvarez, amid the revelry of mariachi music and WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza belting out tunes on the microphone, came in slightly lighter at 167.6 pounds, while the heavily muscled Cameroonian-Frenchman tipped the scales at a 167.8 pounds.
Afterward, the two faced off in their final staredown before Saturday's title bout .
"This is very important for me," Alvarez said through a translator. "I've been doing this for the last 21 years. I won my first title 16 years ago, so it's very important for me to be here, to take that title, and obviously get back into that world championship corner.
"He's never faced anybody like that, so tomorrow I'm going to teach him exactly what it is to face somebody like me."
Saturday's fight marks Alvarez's first appearance in more than 13 months, following his unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025 . Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs), 36, subsequently underwent surgery on his left elbow and spent much of the past year recovering. The Mexican superstar now has an opportunity to reclaim one of the super middleweight titles he lost to Crawford, who retired from boxing in December.
Standing in his way is Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs), the undefeated 31-year-old who was elevated to full WBC super middleweight champion following Crawford's retirement. Mbilli last competed on the same September 2025 card as Alvarez, fighting Lester Martinez to a split draw. Saturday represents the biggest fight of Mbilli's career and his first defense of the WBC championship.
"Tomorrow night I'm going to beat him everywhere. Best conditioning, best punch, best technique. I'm going to put my 100% on my fight," Mbilli said.
"[This will be] the fight of the decade. It's the fight of the year, it will be an amazing fight. Don't miss this, it will be incredible."
The matchup headlines the "Mexico vs. The World" boxing event in Riyadh, which has drawn immense scrutiny for remaining in Saudi Arabia despite escalating regional conflicts and missile and drone attacks that have disrupted international travel and forced the postponement or cancellation of other major sporting events.
Saturday's card also features WBA super middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (167.4) taking on Nikita Zon (167.5) in the co-feature, while Rafael Espinoza (125.8) is scheduled to defend his WBO featherweight championship against Ricardo Blandon (126).
