Floyd Schofield survives late knockdown to seize WBA title; Sergio Mendoza shocks Ricardo Sandoval in major upset

Two new world champions were crowned on a dramatic night of boxing in "The Windy City."In Saturday's main event, Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi traded knockdowns in their WBA lightweight title contest, with Schofield climbing off the canvas to win a unanimous decision (115-111, 116-110, 119-108) and claim the vacant belt at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.Heavy underdog Sergio Mendoza shocked the boxing world in the co-feature by knocking out Ricardo Sandoval in Round 5 in a major upset and dethroning him as unified WBA and WBC flyweight champion. With the win, Schofield, 24, becomes the second-youngest world champion in boxing today. The youngest? Fellow undefeated American lightweight champion Abdullah Mason, who owns the WBO belt. Mason wasted no time calling out Schofield after his win."He got a title now, J," Mason posted on social media minutes after the fight, tagging his manager James "J." Prince. "What we doin'? Unification?" View this post on Instagram Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy, which promotes Schofield, also represents WBC champion William Zepeda, presenting another potential unification opportunity for Schofield. Zepeda, however, must take care of his mandatory Jadier Herrera first. On Saturday, Schofield (20-0, 13 KOs) outboxed Bahdi (20-1, 15 KOs) early behind his jab, using plenty of movement. Bahdi was unable to cut off the ring effectively and consistently walked into shots from Schofield. The new champion hurt the Canadian twice in Round 3 with rights and then floored him with a left hook counter late in the frame.DOWN GOES LUCAS BAHDI😱#SchofieldBahdi | Live NOW on DAZN▪️ pic.twitter.com/7zpLSVVXGe— DAZN Boxing (@DAZNBoxing) October 11, 2026 Schofield continued his momentum into Round 4, landing a strong left hook on Bahdi, but Bahdi closed the frame well, wobbling Schofield's legs with a hook of his own.It turned into a firefight in Round 6, with both men hurt in a terrific three-minute spell. Bahdi hurt Schofield with a left hook and continued to chip away at him with power punches. Instead of weathering the storm, Schofield fought fire with fire and hurt Bahdi in response. It was Schofield, though, who ended up badly rocked courtesy of monster rights from Bahdi. "Kid Austin" ended the round by walking Bahdi into a left hook that seemed to trouble him. Schofield racked up rounds by moving and jabbing, with Bahdi unable to pin him down.Late in Round 9, Bahdi was robbed of a knockdown when he connected with an overhand right, and Schofield's knee touched the canvas, but the referee did not administer a count. It leveled out, though, because in Round 11, when Schofield slipped, the referee ruled that one a knockdown.Lucas Bahdi DROPS Floyd Schofield in round 11! 👀#SchofieldBahdi | Live NOW on DAZN▪️ pic.twitter.com/f2BTZ8L1l4— DAZN Boxing (@DAZNBoxing) October 11, 2026 Schofield fought with a safety-first approach in Round 12, knowing he was just three minutes away from capturing his first world title. In the end, Schofield won a fairly wide decision.Saturday's card was supposed to have a compelling co-feature between Sandoval (27-3, 18 KOs) and Oscar Collazo, but Collazo was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury. The replacement secured by Golden Boy made for a fight just as exciting, but very few knew the man stepping in, Mexico's Sergio Mendoza (28-1, 24 KOs).Mendoza was once a top prospect in Mexico, however he fell short when he challenged for the IBF light flyweight title in April. Overlooked heading into Saturday, Mendoza proved why one loss shouldn't define a fighter's career. He knocked Sandoval down twice in Round 2, first with a right hook and then a devastating left uppercut late in the round. Sandoval managed to get up both times, but he never really recovered.‼️ Sergio Mendoza KNOCKS DOWN Ricardo Sandoval twice in Round 2.
