UFC Vegas 121: Raoni Barcelos stretchered out, hospitalized after scary fifth-round KO by Raul Rosas Jr.

Raul Rosas Jr. emerged from UFC Vegas 121 with the biggest win of his career. We're still not quite sure what happened.

The 21-year-old rising star defeated Raoni Barcelos in his first career main event, getting a needed knockout in the fifth round. It's unclear how exactly he got the stoppage, as Barcelos, 39, appeared to lose consciousness either as he was taken down or after.

Barcelos had to be carried out of the Octagon on a stretcher, a surreal and frightening ending to what had been shaping up to be a Fight of the Year contender. He did not appear to be moving on the stretcher.

"I want everybody tonight to please pray for Raoni Barcelos. He's a warrior," Rosas said in his post-fight interview.

The UFC later reported that both fighters were being taken to the hospital for head and neck scans.

Uncrowned's Ariel Helwani has learned Barcelos regained consciousness and is able to speak and move his fingers and toes.

Barcelos' coach, Davi Ramos, released a statement echoing Helwani's report .

The UFC issued a follow-up statement late Saturday night:

Following his fight tonight, Raoni Barcelos was immediately transported to a Level 1 trauma center for evaluation. The hospital medical team conducted a CT scan and comprehensive assessment, and he is currently being monitored. Barcelos is stable, alert and responsive, with full movement. He will remain under medical supervision. We will provide updates on his condition as they become available.

It had been an extremely high-paced fight, with the two fighters both throwing more than 300 total strikes, and Barcelos (22-6) logging 22 takedown attempts. All of that appeared to be part of a winning effort, as Barcelos dominated the second and the fourth rounds and was leading by multiple points on all three scorecards heading into the fifth round . Barcelos even earned a 10-8 score in the fourth round on one judge's scorecard.

Rosas (13-1) needed a finish to extend his winning streak to six wins. He got it, but we can only hope it didn't come at the cost of something serious for Barcelos.
