New Steph Curry Rumors Reveal Warriors' Presentation to Convince Star to Sign Historic Contract

The Golden State Warriors and Stephen Curry have plenty of familiarity with one another, but the organization made sure to be thorough when it pitched the 12-time All-Star on a new contract.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Friday that Curry agreed to a two-year, $116 million extension. According to colleague Anthony Slater , Golden State tabled "several contract choices in recent weeks, including the option to wait."

"As part of the Warriors' presentation to Curry, the team laid out various paths that included the idea of a slight pay cut from his max, delivering them more salary cap room to build a contender around him in the future, team sources said," per Slater.

Curry is on the books for $62.6 million in 2026-27, while his new deal averages $58 million annually. A little cap savings can go a long way, especially for a team that's a consistently high spender.

Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green and Brandin Podziemski combine to have a cap hold of $124 million in 2027-28. Depending on how the Warriors handle those three, they could have some serious cash to spend next summer.

Some heavy hitters could be hitting the market at that time. Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Karl-Anthony Towns, Kevin Durant and Rudy Gobert all have player options. Michael Porter Jr., Tyler Herro and RJ Barrett will be unrestricted free agents outright.

Since winning the 2022 NBA Finals, Golden State has missed the playoffs twice and failed to advance past the second round in the two years it reached the postseason.

Curry continues to play at a high level relative to his age (38), but he's clearly not at his peak anymore. For other stars around the NBA, the allure of teaming up with the two-time MVP isn't the same as it was five years ago.

Perhaps the organization's championship window is shut for good. Even if that's the case, the front office is determined to go down fighting and surround Curry with as strong a supporting cast as possible.
