Miami Heat star Giannis Antetokounmpo offered some insight into how he views himself historically while speaking to some young ballers at a basketball camp in South Florida.
At one point, Antetokounmpo is asked what the campers can learn from his basketball journey. He said he wasn't a heralded prospect prior to arriving in the NBA and didn't earn a lot of early plaudits. Still, he went on to be "top 20 of all time," and he plans on moving into the top 10 (11:42 mark).
Players With the Most to Prove This Season 🏀
Antetokounmpo is a 10-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA honoree and a two-time MVP with one title on his resume. The 31-year-old also had a stretch of four straight first-team All-Defensive nods and was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2019-20.
Even if the Greek Freak doesn't go on to capture another championship, his accolades speak for themselves.
Antetokounmpo is 24th on Bleacher Report's list of the greatest NBA players, which was published in 2025. To coincide with the league's 75th anniversary in 2021-22, ESPN and The Athletic ranked him 18th and 24th respectively.
Some may disagree, but Giannis isn't going out on a limb by granting himself top-20 status.
Climbing up the ladder will require some more work. Antetokounmpo would likely need at least one more NBA Finals triumph and multiple seasons where he collected MVP votes.
Given the injury troubles he has experienced in recent years, achieving either of those things is far from a guarantee.
Should Antetokounmpo fail to meaningfully improve his legacy, top 20 isn't a bad place to reside.
