Gabby Williams scored a game-high 26 points (including 16 in the second quarter) to lead the Golden State Valkyries to a 68-64 home win over the Atlanta Dream in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Saturday afternoon.
Here's a look at notable box score stats and highlights from San Francisco's Chase Center.
Atlanta led for most of the game and took a 22-14 lead after one thanks to an 11-0 quarter-closing run. Angel Reese scored half of Atlanta's points at an efficient 5-of-6 clip.
However, Golden State held the halftime edge after outscoring the Dream 28-17 in the second quarter. Valkyries forward Gabby Williams nearly outscored Atlanta by herself in the second quarter.
The third quarter was all Atlanta thanks in part to All-Star guard Allisha Gray, who returned to the lineup after missing nearly three games with an injured ring finger on her left (shooting) hand.
Gray scored six points and added an assist in the third quarter, when Atlanta outscored Golden State 17-9. She capped the quarter with an impressive off-balance two-pointer.
The pattern in this game featured Atlanta and Golden State alternating dominant quarters, so it was the Valkyries' turn in the fourth. Golden State outscored Atlanta 17-8 in the final 10 minutes, including a 7-0 run (all on free throws) in the last 2:15 of regulation. Williams scored six of those points. She also previously hit a clutch shot to cut Atlanta's lead to 62-61.
It's no surprise that the league's top two most efficient defenses played a tough, low-scoring battle. In the end, the Valkyries won a close one.
Golden State will now host Atlanta for Game 2 on Monday at 8 p.m. ET.
