Michigan's Brandon McCoy's Knee Injury Return Timeline Revealed, 5-Star SG Was Top-10 Recruit

The start of the college basketball season is still months away, but Michigan's national championship defense already took a major hit.

The Wolverines announced on Tuesday that freshman shooting guard Brandon McCoy will miss the entire 2026-27 season after suffering a torn ACL. McCoy was a 5-star recruit and the No. 10 overall player in the 2026 class in 247Sports' composite .

Per Clayton Sayfie of On3.com, McCoy injured his knee 20 seconds into an exhibition game against Serbian professional team Mega SUPERBET on Aug. 27 in Croatia when he fell awkwardly while attempting a layup. He had to be carried off the court by teammates, and he didn't return to the bench for the remainder of the game.

Before going down with the injury, McCoy impressed in the first two games of the Wolverines' European trip. Sayfie reported that the youngster recorded 14 points, five rebounds and four steals in his Michigan debut against the Lithuania National Team before finishing with 15 points and five rebounds against the Lithuania National B Team.

A 6'5", 190-pound prospect out of Sierra Canyon High School in California, McCoy has the makings of a future two-way star. 247Sports director of scouting Adam Finkelstein described him as "one of the very best defenders in the class" and "a physically gifted guard who plays with a motor, imposes his will on the game on both ends of the floor, and has room for future growth with the progression of his shooting and total guard skills."

Losing McCoy will certainly hurt Michigan's depth in the backcourt, but the Wolverines should be able to manage his absence with veterans like senior guard Elliot Cadeau leading the way.
