Team USA offense revives in 105-64 win over Czechia at FIBA Women's World Cup to finish group play
Up next for Team USA in the tournament quarterfinals is the winner of Tuesday's Hungary-Japan matchup.
Team USA found its scoring touch for a 105-64 win over Czechia in its group play matchup at the FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin on Monday.
The U.S. had already qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament after winning its first two games in Group D competition. Meanwhile, Czechia was eliminated in the group stage after losing its first two games.
Breanna Stewart was hot from the start, notching 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting in the first quarter. She finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Napheesa Collier, Jackie Young and Angel Reese each added 12 points. Collier also grabbed seven boards while Reese registered six in the win.
Every USA player scored at least one basket after Sonia Citron hit a baseline jumper at the end of the third. Citron finished with 10 points, as did Paige Bueckers. Caitlin Clark added 9 points and 7 assists, shooting 1-for-6 on 3-pointers.
The Americans only had one player score in double figures in Sunday's 55-52 win over Italy with Jackie Young tallying 10 points.
Team USA ended the first quarter with a 29-15 lead, shooting 52% from the floor. That was significantly encouraging after a 29% team shooting performance versus Italy.
The U.S. went ahead by 21 points with a 17-9 run through the first seven minutes of the second quarter and eventually took a 57-33 lead into halftime. That was more points than USA scored in Sunday's entire game.
The onslaught continued in the third quarter with Team USA opening up a 32-point margin after a 14-3 run.
Long-range shooting is still an issue for the Americans, who shot 28% (7 for 25) on 3-pointers. That was an improvement over the 1-for-12 (8%) effort versus Italy , but no USA player hit more than one shot from behind the arc against Czechia.
Eliska Joklova led Czechia with 19 points, hitting 11-of-14 free throws. She was the only Czechian player to reach double figures, though Julie Pospisilova scored nine while Natalie Stoupalova and Veronika Vorackova each got eight points.
Team USA has already qualified for the quarterfinals with three wins in Group D play. Those include a 94-61 win over China to open the tournament, along with the victory versus Italy. The Americans will face the winner of Tuesday's Hungary-Japan matchup on Thursday.
