LeBron James ended up with the Philadelphia 76ers, but there were times this offseason Stephen Curry thought the King was joining him on the Golden State Warriors.
"We took some shots at him," Curry said during an interview with ESPN's Marc J. Spears.
When asked if he ever felt that James was coming to Golden State, Curry said, "There were days I did, days I didn't. If this was high up on his list, we would have felt that. Until you hear the final decision, you've got to think you have a shot. I guess a guy like that, when you have the ability to go anywhere you want in the league to find a place that's right for you."
James would have been yet another aging veteran on a Warriors team that has plenty in Curry, Draymond Green, Jimmy Butler and Al Horford, but he would have been quite the headliner.
And the James-Curry pairing would have been one of the most memorable ones in NBA history seeing how they have combined for eight championships and six MVPs as the two defining players of their generation.
It also surely would have worked on the court beyond just the spectacle.
Curry's gravitational pull as arguably the greatest shooter of all-time would have created plenty of space for James to operate, and there is perhaps nobody better suited to take advantage of that space with the combination of basketball IQ, passing, physicality and scoring touch than the King.
While neither may be at their peak at this stage of their career, the duo would have likely carried the Warriors to plenty of wins this season.
Alas, James joined the 76ers instead and has a number of talented teammates surrounding him with Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, among others.
He is positioned to challenge for another spot in the NBA Finals, while the Warriors will look to challenge for a Western Conference playoff spot with their own group of veterans.
