Two years after Marc Lore took over as majority owner and governor of the Minnesota Timberwolves, he has sold most of his interest in the NBA franchise as well as the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx.
Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Marc Stad will take over as controlling owner of the T-Wolves and Lynx after buying a majority of Lore's interest at a $4.5 billion valuation.
Offseason Overreactions for Every Team 🫨
MLB legend Alex Rodriguez, who was part of the group that purchased the Timberwolves and Lynx with Lore, issued a statement Friday saying he will be increasing his investment in the team.
"One of the great joys I've had in my career is spending the last few years helping build the Timberwolves and Lynx with my friend and partner Marc Lore," Rodriguez said.
"I'm very excited to announce that this incredible journey reaches a new level today. Marc and Elisa Stad, who have been our partners and friends since we bought the teams, will be increasing their investment and joining me as Co-Chairman. I will also be increasing my investment and spending even more time with the teams as Co-Chairman, Governor of the Lynx, and alternate Governor of the Timberwolves, pending league approval. While Marc Lore will be reducing his role and ownership to focus on his business, he remains an investor and a key part of our partnership. I could not be more energized about this evolution and what we're all going to do together for the Twin Cities."
The Timberwolves sale marks the ninth time an NBA franchise has been sold since 2022, including the deal that saw Lore and Rodriguez purchase Minnesota from Glen Taylor.
It was less than two weeks ago that Mark Walter agreed to sell the Los Angeles Lakers to Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner at a $12.5 billion valuation. Walter's purchase of the franchise had just been approved by the NBA board of governors in October 2025.
Other NBA franchises that have been sold during this period include the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Charlotte Hornets, Boston Celtics and Portland Trail Blazers.
The Lore-Rodriguez purchase of the Timberwolves was officially approved by the NBA in June 2025. Their approval came after a prolonged battle with Taylor, who said in March 2024 that Lore and Rodriguez lost the financial backing needed to make their final payment required to claim majority ownership of the franchise.
Lore and Rodriguez faced questions about their long-term financial ability to maintain a competitive NBA roster. Adrian Wojnarowski, then of ESPN, reported in April 2024 that part of Taylor's concern with selling to them was a budget projection for the 2024-25 season from Lore and Rodriguez that would have cut $27 million in payroll to get under the luxury tax.
In the lone season with Lore and Rodriguez as controlling owners, the Timberwolves had the third-highest payroll in the NBA.
Forbes noted Stad's investment group manages over $35 billion in capital, though his specific net worth is not mentioned in the article.
The Timberwolves have made the playoffs in five consecutive seasons, making the Western Conference Finals in 2024 and 2025. They finished last season as the No. 6 seed in the West and upset the Denver Nuggets in the first round before losing to the San Antonio Spurs in the conference semifinals.
