‘Unserious League,’ ‘Clown Show’ — Outrage Erupts Over ‘Ridiculous’ Flagrant Foul Against Sophie Cunningham in Game 1 of Fever-Aces

The Indiana Fever 's fanbase has more to deal with than the disappointment of the team's 102-85 loss to the Las Vegas Aces to open the 2026 WNBA playoffs. Officiating was once again a sore sight for the Fever's loyalists, with Sophie Cunningham on the receiving end of one contentious call.

The Fever guard was slapped with a Flagrant 1 for fouling the Aces' Chelsea Gray early in the game, leaving fans fuming.

The Fever vs. Aces battle at Michelob ULTRA Arena began with the intensity everyone expects from a playoff game. Stephanie White's squad managed to take a 16-14 lead with 3:32 left in the first quarter when Cunningham, who had checked in for Lexie Hull less than two minutes earlier, got tangled in a play with Gray that ultimately brought her a Flagrant 1.

Gray was attempting a midrange shot when Cunningham closed in to contest it. She made contact with Gray, and the Aces' guard went down to the floor. Cunningham was assessed a foul , which, upon review, was upgraded to a Flagrant 1. Gray then stepped to the line and made 1 of 2 free throws.

For Fever fans, it was a questionable call, and they didn't hold back from venting their frustration on social media.

"This is why no1 takes @wnba seriously," one fan wrote .

"Unserious league," another piled on , taking a dig at the WNBA's officiating, which has been under the microscope throughout the season.

"That's not a flagrant in any way at any level. That's ridiculous!" a Fever supporter vented .

"This league is a joke," another declared .

"The refs have no clue what is a flagrant foul is! This is a clown show … Vegas doesn't need the help of the refs to win," one more pushed back .

Fever fans' frustration was amplified by the fact that their team lost its energy in the closing minutes of the first quarter. Cunningham did hit back-to-back 3-pointers before the end of the opening frame, but the Aces finished the period with a 27-23 lead.

Indiana briefly regained the lead early in the second quarter before Las Vegas pulled away. The Fever later caught some momentum in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to prevent their 17-point loss.

MVP favorite A'ja Wilson's imprint was all over the contest, as she scored effortlessly and finished with a game-high 38 points on 15-for-19 shooting and 16 rebounds.

As for Cunningham, she bounced back from her disappointing 0-point outing in Indiana's regular-season finale. The Fever guard, appearing in the WNBA playoffs for the sixth season in her career, posted 13 points on 3-for-6 shooting. But her team couldn't overcome the challenge from the defending champions.

The Fever are now 0-1 in the first round and need to win Game 2 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to stay alive in the playoffs.
